This was the period of greatest growth for the U.K., nearly doubling. France, in part due to the Franco-Prussian War, had nearly stagnated. Germany, in line with her new power, had grown - to 54 million counting the additional territory. Russia also doubled, but this includes the Ukraine and much of Eastern Europe. China, on the other hand, had shrunk! This was due to brutal suppression of social unrest and famine, in conjunction with near-slavery imposed by the Colonial powers; America, for example, abducted many to build the railroads. In comparison, the U.S. had 76m, Africa is estimated at 133m and Russia is only slightly greater today.
